Fleeing from a troubled past that left him feeling tarnished and used, Sean finds work as a medic aboard the deep sea mining ship Ariel, on a distant planet.
Under the leader ship of the infuriating, yet charismatic, Captain Joel Riley, Sean settles into his simple, but dangerous, new life. It’s a life he soon comes to love; albeit one in which he conceals his sexuality and avoids intimacy.
But Sean’s new world is turned on its head when an old face threatens to expose him for the man he used to be.
With Joel’s help, will Sean learn to come to terms with his past and become a man he can be proud of?
DEEP EXCERPT 2
Mia came to collect David and show him to one of the empty sleeping quarters. If she suspected anything was going on, she didn’t show it. Sean exhaled loudly once he was alone. He needed to get some air, which wasn’t going to happen this deep. Of all the people they could have dug up from his past, David was the worst. He knew everything about Sean, every sordid detail. What would the crew think? What would the captain think?
“Hey, Doc.” Think of the devil.
Sean tried to compose himself. “Captain, is everything okay?” He gulped, and he was sure the captain noticed.
“Just wondering if there is anything I should know about our guest.”
“Eh, no, he’s perfectly well. No disease, no signs of any contamination. He has a clean bill of health.”
Joel folded his arms, his body filling the doorway. There was no escape. “Anything else you want to tell me?”
Sean swallowed. He knows. “I, eh….”
“You know him.” Joel stated it matter-of-factly, which meant he wanted more.
“Yes,” Sean confessed. That bit was easy; explaining how was harder. “From Earth. He’s an old friend. I’m very surprised to see him here. This isn’t the type of place a man like him would find himself.”
“Could say the same about you.” Joel stepped forward. He’d recently showered, and his hair was still wet.
Sean found himself distracted by the droplets of water running down Joel’s neck.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
Like every author I know, I can get terrible writer’s block. Sometimes life’s stresses hold me back, other times I’m just not enjoying the story I’m writing. I’d been writing a big complex novel/series for over a year and it just wasn’t anywhere near what I wanted it to be, so I took a break and tried my hand at a new idea. Three weeks later I had written The Deep, and suddenly my writing buzz was back. Sometimes all it takes is a little side step to get where you need to be… and in my case, I even got a surprise story out of it too.
What comes first, the plot or characters?
For me, in everything I write, it’s always the characters that come first. In the Deep, I came up with Sean and Joel long before anything else, and the setting and storyline grew around them. I think the most important aspect to any story, especially with sci-fi, is to have believable characters readers can relate to. I concentrate on the characters and then if my plot or setting isn’t working they tend to reject it anyway.
Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.
Although this is a romance, it’s also a sci-fi, set on a mining ship in an oceanic moon. The ship dives to the depths of the ocean, collecting precious minerals to sell to Earth. But there are many dangers. The sea, the marine life, even other mining ships all pose a threat to our characters. The crew of Ariel is skilled miners but even they get taken by surprise when they encounter a viper shark attack.
Are you working on anything at the present you would like to tell us about?
I have literally just started the sequel to the Deep. I wrote the first chapter last night and have a vague plan where I’m going with the plot. Although I had never planned to go further with this story, Sean, and Joel weren’t finished with me and so I’m back at the computer again, planning their future and the latest set of hurdles they need to encounter. I’ve also just had another m/m sci-fi accepted by Wayward Ink called Blood Lines, which will hopefully be coming out sometime this year. This is slightly different to the Deep, set instead on an off-world colony and two friends trying to stay alive and together.
How do you come up with the titles to your books?
With The Deep, the title came to me after the third chapter. The setting of the book is ”the deep” but the story is also about the feelings and demons we bury deep within ourselves. Sean is physically sinking deeper in the ship, but also, he’s having to explore the darker parts of himself he keeps away from the surface.
What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
As my editors told me, I overuse the word ”just.” I just can’t help myself. I’m also terrible at using adverbs. I write my first draft very quickly and tend to use adverbs to develop later… only I often forget and leave them there. Luckily the editorial team at Wayward Ink make sure the books are polished before publication and don’t tolerate any lazy writing from me.
But in so far as a positive aspect to my writing, the thing I tend to be known for is my dialogue. I love snappy conversations (probably from watching too much West Wing) and I like to throw in dark humor to all my scenes.
