Recording Indie Artist and Actor Cory Singer will be a featured actor in The World Premiere of THE HARVEY MILK MUSICAL, HERE TO RECRUIT YOU, which debuts as part of the NYC 2019 FRESH FRUIT FESTIVAL Supported by the Stonewall Consortium.
HERE TO RECRUIT YOU is The All Out Arts special feature for the Stonewall-50 Celebration.
The Stonewall 50 Consortium is an organization that brings together scores of nonprofit institutions and organizations committed to producing programming, exhibitions, and educational materials related to the Stonewall uprising and/or the history of the LGBTQ civil rights movement in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in June 2019.
Cory Singer returned to the theater stage in May 2019 after taking a six year hiatus to focus on his recording career after winning a singing competition on BRAVO TV ‘s Kandi Factory. Prior to his television debut he celebrated a coveted theater career in his youth including a 2011 Perry Award Nomination and a 2013 Broadway World Nomination for best Vocalist for his performance at The Bickford Theater’s Production of Joe DiPietro’s “The Last Romance”. HERE TO RECRUIT YOU Playwright and Director Michael Boyd said, “I had gone to see friends perform in a production of “Follies.” I had no idea who Cory was, but when he came onstage and began to sing I knew instantly that he was someone I wanted to work with.” Cory will play Oliver Wellington “Billy” Sipple who was a decorated U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran, who was left disabled by the war. On September 22, 1975, he grappled with Sara Jane Moore as she fired a pistol at U.S. President Gerald Ford in San Francisco, causing her to miss. The subsequent public revelation that Sipple was gay turned the news story into a cause célèbre for LGBT rights activists, leading Sipple to unsuccessfully sue several publishers for invasion of privacy, and causing his estrangement from his parents.
HERE TO RECRUIT YOU, a new play with music highlighting the little-known theatrical career of gay political icon HARVEY MILK, will have its world premiere as part of the 2019 Fresh Fruit Festival. Prior to becoming California’s first openly-gay elected official, HARVEY MILK lived – and loved – among a group of downtown bohemian artists on the verge of re-defining the Broadway musical. It was a time (the 1960s) and place (New York City) that informed his politics and inspired his activism. Beginning in 1964, HERE TO RECRUIT YOU chronicles Milk’s quest to find love, success, and a purpose in life as he transitions from Wall Street businessman to Broadway producer and, finally, to a celebrated politician whose life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet.
Heading the cast as Harvey Milk is Jonathan Ritter who has appeared on Broadway in Wicked, Finding Neverland, and Sweet Charity.
Performances at The Wild Project (195 East 3rd Street) July 18th and 20th at 8:00pm, and July 21st at 4:00pm. Link to purchase tickets: https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/cal/527
