A couple years ago I said to Sadie, “Want to write a detective series with me?” And she said, “What else can we put in it?”

I think we talked about just about everything paranormal. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts. Probably even less likely things. Jake was starting to take root in my head, his heritage, where he came from. Jake is Potawatomi and they are known as the fire keepers. The idea of writing about people that were descendants of Elementals grew.

We had long conversations about psychic abilities and how they would fit into traditional correlations for the elements, while at the same time avoiding certain stereotypes. So, for example, Jake has a passionate nature, but I didn’t want to make him a rageaholic. Mari is very intellectual and indulges his techy-geek side, but he’s by no means an airhead.

Mari’s ability as an interface, someone who uses his mind to hack into computer and communications systems, that fits very well with his element of air and its correlation to intellect and communication. Jake’s ability of psychometry, to see memories from the past that are imprinted on objects, is maybe a little less obviously connected to the fire element. The way I was thinking of it is that those memories are ‘burned’ into the objects, if you were wondering.

When we started talking about book two I said to Sadie, “What do you think would happen if someone on the Underground just burst into flames?”

I can’t remember her exact words but it was something along the lines of ‘complete pandemonium’. I said, “Great, let’s write that.”

I think both Jake and Mari have developed more in Burning Boundaries, and their relationship is heating up as well. Writing this one was intense, and there are some darker scenes, as well as some experimentation. We hope everyone enjoys the suspense.

Their passion isn’t the only thing creating flames.

Mari Gale’s life has been a whirlwind since meeting Jake Chivis. A new job prospect and his mother’s health preoccupy him, so when Jake invites him on a date he’s ready to cut loose. Their night out turns into a nightmare when a fire breaks out in the basement of the bar and they barely escape.

Soon Jake learns that the horrific accident is being investigated as a possible homicide, and it’s not the only case. Detective Inspector Cordiline of the London Met hints at spontaneous human combustion, but as far as Jake knows, SHC doesn’t exist.

When Mari looks into a group called Birthright, he finds a connection to the victims of the fires and Jake risks himself to go undercover at the shadowy organization. The race is on to determine the truth before Jake becomes the next target.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a non-consensual scene.
