There has been new headway with the petition to pardon the 49,000 gay men inspired by THE IMITATION GAME. The British government has responded in an amazing way backing the pardon and committing to push the pardons through Parliament.
2 British political leaders are pushing the government to pardon the estimated 49,000 gay men who were prosecuted by the same unjust law that criminalized Alan Turing for being gay. Members of Turing’s family recently delivered the petition to 10 Downing Street. The petition has over 590,000 signatures from supporters.
The Labour party’s leader Ed Miliband and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg both spoke out this week saying they would work to overturn and pardon those convicted gay men.
QUOTE FROM MP ED MILIBAND, LEADER OF THE LABOUR PARTY:
“What was right for Alan Turing’s family should be right for other families as well. The next Labour government will extend the right individuals already have to overturn convictions that society now see as grossly unfair to the relatives of those convicted who have passed away.”
QUOTE FROM MP NICK CLEGG, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS PARTY:
“Alan Turing and the thousands of other men should never have been prosecuted. It is utterly wrong that so many people were convicted simply for being who they are. The Liberal Democrats and I will work to make sure those with convictions for consensual homosexual activity between adults are pardoned. It should never have been a crime in the first place.”

TWC released THE IMITATION GAME in select theaters on November 28th and nationwide on December 25th. It has since become the year’s top grossing independent film at the domestic box office, with $87M in ticket sales to date. Produced by Black Bear Pictures and Bristol Automotive, the film won the Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay (Graham Moore) and was nominated for seven others, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actress (Keira Knightley) and Best Director (Morten Tyldum.) It was also nominated for five Golden Globe® Awards, included in the American Film Institute’s top 11 films of the year and nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Directed by Tyldum, produced by Nora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky and Teddy Schwarzman, with a screenplay by Moore, the film stars Cumberbatch, Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance and Mark Strong.
During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save millions of lives.
